Ben Folds Five

Ben Folds Five

Ben Folds Five came through Schubas as an opening act for Heather Nova in September of 1995. Touring in support of their critically acclaimed debut self-titled album, Robert Sledge, Darren Jessee and Ben Folds piano-smashed and three-part-harmonied out a fantastic opening set less than a year after the bands' formation. Two years later, the band would release Whatever and Ever Amen, achieving their greatest airplay, attention and success with their singles 'Brick", "Song for the Dumped", and "Battle of Who Could Care Less" falling into heavy rotation on MTV and popular radio. The band broke up in 2000 and, to give you an idea of how big the band had become by their demise consider that, according to Australian Radio Host Andy Lee, they announced its decision to break up after their performance on The Late Show with David Letterman on July 19, 2000. It was apparently Will Ferrell who broke the awkward silence after the decision was made (Ferrell was a guest on the show that night).

Robert Sledge has since taken up singing and bass playing duties with International Orange (which broke up in 2005), and Darren Jessee is now fronting the band Hotel Lights. Ben Folds has gone on to have a rather successful solo career, releasing two albums, six EPs and contributing tunes to a great many films and television shows.
