Devendra Banhart
Freak-folk posterboy Devendra Banhart has stopped by Belmont & Southport twice; once in April of 2003 and again in July of that same year, the latter of which found him playing a large portion of the set sitting Indian-style on a table he requested be onstage for his performance. Since then, DevBan has gone on to start a record label (Gnomonsong), have his song 'Little Yellow Spider' used in a UK television ad, collaborate with Vashti Bunyan, Antony, Yoko Ono and others, and release Cripple Crow, his most sonically expansive and critically acclaimed album yet. He now commands the sorts of crowds that fill Union Park, as he did for the 2006 Pitchfork Music Festival, which is significantly more people than can fit in the intimate music room here at Schubas. That doesn't change the fact that, in 2003, he was just a guy sitting on a table making some great music, waiting on the world to listen.
